Radon is a natural, colorless and odorless radioactive gas which can only be detected with the usage of specialized equipment.
The Forensic expert kollegium conducts measurements of the equivalent equilibrium volumetric activity (EEVA) of the subsidiary products of radon isotopes (222Rn and 220Rn). This quantitative indicator is normalized for assessing the radiation hazard of short-lived subsidiary products of radon (thoron), calculated with taking into account their contribution to the effective radiation dose.
In the atmospheric air, radon is contained in small quantities and does not pose a threat to humans, however, the level of radon in the air of residential, public and industrial buildings and structures varies greatly and may not correspond to standardized indicators. Prolonged stay of a person in an area with a high content of radon poses a threat to human health and life. So, getting into the respiratory tract, radon initiates burns and is one of the significant causes of lung cancer.
Exceeding the normalized indicators requires the use of protective measures to reduce the concentration of radon in the premises of permanent/predominant human presence.
