By type of drive are distinguished:

- power tools;
- inventory.
By the nature of the working organ, tools and inventory are divided into:
- tools with a rotational movement of the working organ;
- tools with reciprocating movement of the working arm;
- pressure tools.
According to the technological and functional features performed, the tools and equipment are divided into:
- cutting tools;
- fitting and assembly tool;
- auxiliary and clamping tools and equipment;
- tools, working by the plastic deformation method;
- abrasive tools;
- measuring tools.
The types and nature of the occurrence of tool and inventory defects are determined both by the type of drive and by the functional features, which are described in the relevant sections.
