The most common defects of hard magnetic disk drives (hard drives) include the following:
- the hard drive is not detected in the BIOS of the motherboard of the system unit of the personal computer;
- inaccessibility of data or logical partition of the hard drive;
- hard disk read/write errors;
- there is no rotation of the hard drive spindle;
- the hard drive is not detected correctly; when the hard drive is operating, uncharacteristic “shuffling” sounds are made;
- slow operation of the hard drive, access to the disk occurs with freezes.
In the expert practice of the Forensic expert kollegium, the most common causes of hard drive failure are:
- factory defect in the manufacture of parts, contacts, controller, soldering;
- mechanical damage to the ferromagnetic surface of the disk or heads;
- damage to the switch chip of the magnetic head unit;
- hard drive utilities failure;
- failure of the hard drive controller due to improper power connection (12 V and 5 V wires are mixed up, overload on the interface connector when connecting the drive while the computer is powered on);
- software malfunctions (damage to the file system, accidental formatting or deletion, malfunctions as a result of viruses, incorrect shutdown of the computer).
