Acoustic calculation of sound insulation of building envelopes and structures is carried out to confirm the provision of acoustic comfort (absence of disturbing noise) in the premises of buildings and structures or for the purpose of designing noise protection measures in case of non-compliance with the requirements of technical regulations in the field of technical regulation and standardization.
Recently, in Russia, the Baltic countries and Western Europe, there have been trends in prioritizing acoustic calculations rather than full-scale studies of noise levels in residential premises of buildings and residential areas. Performing an acoustic calculation before field noise level studies has the following advantages:
- when studying the actual noise level, quite often the measuring device is affected by extraneous noise sources (passing or parking vehicles, noise from household electrical appliances and the sounds of life activity of residents of a residential building), but when carrying out an acoustic calculation, only noise sources of the actual premises or building with high sound levels are taken into account;
- during field measurements, before each series of measurements, it is necessary to calibrate noise measuring equipment (sound meters), which requires not only expensive certified calibration equipment (calibrators), but also significant qualifications of the personnel performing this calibration. For various reasons, many acoustic testing laboratories do not carry out daily calibration of sound level meters, which causes an additional measurement error reaching 3-5 dB in octave frequency bands, especially when using noise measuring equipment from Russian manufacturers. Acoustic calculations are based on measurement results obtained in reverberation chambers of testing laboratories during bench tests, or on standard data, which, taking into account modern technological developments, are in many cases overestimated;
- acoustic calculation allows not only to identify violations of acoustic comfort, but also to identify its causes, and also provides with informed design solutions to improve sound insulation and noise protection.
Recently, when commissioning large retail, entertainment and industrial facilities, sanitary and epidemiological control authorities in Minsk require a comprehensive acoustic calculation at the stage of approval of the construction project, as well as acceptance acoustic tests before putting the facilities into operation.
