Recently, the concept of “auto expertise” has begun to appear on the Internet, which implies an independent expertise of vehicles. The term “auto expertise” is a household jargon, and its use is not entirely correct from the point of view of the most common classification of forensic expertise proposed by the famous Soviet criminologists A.R. Shlyakhov and Yu.G. Korukhov.
A car can be the subject of criminological, forensic engineering, technical and economic expertise.
A motor vehicle as an object of a criminological expertise is examined in the following types of expertise:
- traceological expertise;
- transport and traceological expertise (this expertise in Belarus is currently classified by the State committee of forensic expertise of the Republic of Belarus as an auto-technical expertise, in other CIS countries - as a traceological expertise);
- expertise of metals and alloys and products made from them.
- among non-forensic expertise, vehicles are examined during auto-technical and auto-commodity expertise.
Classical trace expertise deals with establishing the origin of vehicle traces, that is, elucidating the mechanism of formation of these traces, determining group affiliation and identifying vehicles. Based on the tracks of vehicles, it is possible to establish the method and direction of the formation of the tracks, the relative position of the vehicles during their collision and crossing, as well as the vehicle and the pedestrian in the event of a collision, what parts of the vehicle could have caused damage, the type of vehicle, and the specific vehicle.
Transport and traceological expertise examines traces directly on the car itself in order to determine the circumstances of the traffic accident.
A subtype of auto-technical expertise - assessment of the technical condition of vehicles - resolves issues related to determining the serviceable and operational condition of the vehicle, and also determines the causes and nature of the occurrence of defects in automobile parts and components.
Auto-commodity expertise examines the physical wear of the vehicle, its cost and the volume of necessary repair work.
Currently, the Forensic expert kollegium conducts all of the above types of expertise.
