Based on the analysis of the expert practice of the Forensic expert kollegium, the most common defects in mobile phones (terminal subscriber devices) are:
- inability to turn on a mobile phone;
- excessive power consumption, which leads to a rapid discharge of the mobile phone battery;
- spontaneous shutdown of a mobile phone;
- inoperability of the keyboard (control buttons) of the mobile phone;
- inoperability or damage to the mobile phone display;
- malfunction of the microphone of a mobile phone;
- malfunction of the mobile phone speaker;
- refusal of a mobile phone to determine a SIM card;
- improper reception of a signal from the base station or its absence;
- mechanical damage to the mobile phone case;
- non-recognition of the recorded data by the mobile phone;
- destruction or improper functioning of mobile phone connectors.
The most common causes of malfunctioning mobile phones are:

- poor-quality repair of a mobile phone in a service workshop (manufacturing defect);
- external unacceptable impact (physical, thermal, flooding, use in rooms with high humidity and temperature) on a mobile phone during its operation (operational defect);
- failures in the operation of mobile phone software due to the installation of malicious or non-adapted software by the user (operational defect);
- intentional or unintentional destruction of parts and assemblies of a mobile phone in a service workshop in order to simulate violations of operating conditions and subsequent denial of warranty service (manufacturing defect);
- intentional destruction of parts and assemblies of a mobile phone by the consumer in order to return it to the seller (operational defect).
A mobile phone can be submitted for expertise at the Forensic expert kollegium by both the seller or repair organization and the consumer. In case of a conflict situation when the repair organization returns the mobile phone to the consumer to submit the object of study for expertise, it is necessary to seal the mobile phone in the presence of both parties in order to avoid possible changes in the state of the mobile phone by the party delivering it to the forensic institution.
When submitting mobile phones for expertise of the quality, it is necessary to present a charger, battery, warranty card and a complete set of operational documentation (passport, manual or instruction) supplied with the mobile phone.
A mobile phone is allowed to be presented for expertise of the quality without the packaging from the manufacturer.
A mobile phone is presented for expertise without a SIM card of a mobile operator.
