Portrait examination, also known as photo-portrait examination, is a specific field aimed at establishing the identity of a person based on the analysis of photographs and other images. It is used in various contexts, including forensic investigations, verification of document authenticity, as well as in cases where confirmation or refutation of the authenticity of images is required.
The purpose of photo-portrait examination is to establish the actual identity of persons depicted in photographs or other visual materials. Portrait examination may be conducted to resolve issues related to the identification of individuals, verification of the reliability of images, and clarification of circumstances related to their creation.
Objects of portrait examination:
- Photographs: images taken with a camera that need to be analyzed to establish the identity of persons or confirm facts.
- Video recordings: frames of video recordings in which identification of persons is required.
- Documents: photographic images contained in documents (for example, passports, identity cards) for verification of their authenticity.
- Digital images: photographic materials stored in digital form that may be objects of examination.
Tasks of portrait examination:
- Comparative analysis: comparison of various images to establish their identity or detect changes.
- Analysis of image reliability: determination of whether the images have been subjected to falsification or montage.
- Identification of persons: establishing whether the images correspond to known individuals or whether they are falsified.
Questions addressed during portrait examination:
- Are the same or different persons depicted in the photographs submitted for comparative examination?
- Is the person depicted in the group photograph the same person whose photograph is submitted for comparison?
- Is there among the persons depicted in the group photograph a person whose photograph is submitted for comparative examination?
- In which of the photographs of different persons (photos No. 1, 2, 3) is the person depicted whose photographs (photos No. 4, 5, 6 and 7) are submitted for comparison?
- Are the differing features of appearance in the compared photographs taken with a large time interval the result of age-related changes?
