The Forensic expert kollegium conducts examinations of various types of metals, alloys, as well as products made from them.

Objects of metals, alloys and metal products examination iclude:

  • metal products and tools (wires, saw blades, files, pliers, etc.);
  • metal fragments (microparticles);
  • outerwear and footwear bearing traces of metallization;
  • metal-containing substances (powders, liquids, etc.).

Typical tasks of metals, alloys and metal products examination:

  • Identification tasks, which include determining the common generic (group) affiliation of the compared objects; determining whether objects belong to the same mass, melt, or batch; and identifying the source of origin.
  • Classification tasks, which include determining whether a metal (alloy) belongs to a specific type according to classifications accepted in science and technology; establishing specific properties, technological parameters, and other characteristics of metal (alloy) objects; and determining whether specific properties and technological parameters comply with technical and regulatory documentation (Technical specifications, GOST standards, etc.).
  • Diagnostic tasks, which include establishing the presence of metal microparticles and traces on carrier objects; determining the intended purpose of metal objects that have not been altered as a result of the event under investigation; determining the nature and mechanism of the destruction of a metal object; and identifying defects or violations of the prescribed manufacturing technology.

Requirements for materials submitted for examination:

  • Each object submitted for examination must be packaged separately in a manner that ensures its complete preservation during transportation.
  • Areas of carrier objects on which traces of metallization, metal filings, shavings, or similar materials are presumed to be present must be packaged in such a way as to prevent their loss or transfer to other areas.
  • Wet or damp carrier objects must be dried beforehand at room temperature to prevent mold formation.

Typical questions addressed during the examination of metals, alloys, and metal products:

  • What metal (alloy) was used to manufacture the items (item fragments, particles, etc.) submitted for examination?
  • Do the chemical composition, hardness, and other characteristics of the metal object submitted for examination comply with GOST standards, Technical specifications, or other applicable requirements?
  • Are metal particles present on the submitted carrier object (clothing, footwear, hacksaw blade)?
  • Were the submitted products and metal blanks manufactured from the same type of alloy?
  • Do the metal filings found on the clothing of the examined person and the metal submitted for comparison have the same chemical composition?
