The Forensic expert kollegium conducts examinations of all types of paint and coating materials. Paint coatings are protective and decorative layers applied to the surface of products. They are widely used in industry and everyday life - from vehicles and construction structures to household appliances, furniture, and other items.
The objects of examination of paint and coating materials include:
- paint coatings on painted objects;
- individual coating fragments;
- samples of paint materials and their components (pigments, dyes, solvents, fillers, plasticizers);
- carrier objects bearing coatings (vehicles, their parts, clothing, tools, etc.).
Within the framework of such examinations, the following tasks are addressed:
- diagnostic - establishing whether repainting or touch-up has occurred, determining the mechanism of trace formation, and identifying whether the coating is factory-applied or not;
- classification - detecting paint materials on a carrier object and determining their type, as well as identifying the nature of coating defects (manufacturing or operational);
- identification - determining whether materials belong to the same group based on comparative samples, and establishing whether fragments belong to the coating of a specific object;
- situational - identifying the fact of contact interaction between painted objects (usually within complex automotive and traceological examinations).
During the examination of paint coatings, the following questions may be addressed:
- Are there traces or particles of paint materials on the object?
- What is the mechanism of formation of paint traces (layers or particles)?
- Does the detected substance belong to paint materials? If so, what specific type?
- Do the particles found on the carrier object (or at the scene) belong to the coating of a specific item?
- Do the compared samples share a common origin (group affiliation)?
- Was there contact interaction between painted objects?
- Has the carrier object been fully or partially repainted? If so, what was its original color?
- Was the coating applied using a factory or non-factory method?
- Are there defects in the coating of a vehicle? If so, what are their causes (manufacturing or operational)?
